Biography
John Kulewicz is the Democratic nominee. He is a Columbus attorney who spent more than four decades as a litigator at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease and has served on the Upper Arlington City Council since 2020. He says he would focus the Attorney General's office on consumer fraud, price-fixing and public corruption rather than what he calls culture-war cases.[1][2][3]
John Kulewicz grew up in Columbus, the son of parents from Martins Ferry and Cincinnati, and says he had a paper route that paid his way through a Catholic education.[2] He won a scholarship to the Ohio State University, where he studied American history, and then earned a law degree from Yale Law School.[1][2] He clerked for a federal judge for one year and then returned to Columbus, where he worked as a litigator for more than 40 years, including at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP, and says he has won cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, the Ohio Supreme Court and courts across the state.[1][2][5]
Kulewicz was elected to the Upper Arlington City Council in 2020 and was re-elected to it.[1][5] He is a former president of the Columbus Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, and says he has served on the boards of the Columbus Zoo, Catholic Social Services, the Ohio Historical Society and the Ohio Bicentennial Commission.[2] Ballotpedia notes that he published a book, An Ohioan's Odyssey: Lessons in Leadership, Law, and Public Service.[1]
Kulewicz says he visited all 88 Ohio counties in 2025 before deciding to run for Attorney General.[2] He won the Democratic primary on May 5, 2026, according to unofficial results projected by the Associated Press.[4]
