Biography

Diana Moreno is the incumbent Assembly Member for District 36, elected in a February 2026 special election to succeed Zohran Mamdani after he became mayor. An immigrant-rights and labor organizer, she describes herself as a democratic socialist and is a member of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America. She won the June 2026 Democratic primary and is on the November 3, 2026 general-election ballot.[1][2][3][4]

Moreno was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador, and immigrated to the United States with her family at age 11. According to the Queens Daily Eagle, she spent her early years in the U.S. in Lakeland, Florida.[3][2][4] She holds an associate degree from Santa Fe College and a bachelor's degree from the University of Florida, according to Ballotpedia.[5]

Her official biography says she began as an organizer unionizing faculty and graduate students, protecting the rights of migrant farmworkers and their children, and organizing immigrant workers as an intern for Make the Road New York; the Queens Daily Eagle reports the internship brought her to Queens.[3][4] Moreno worked at the immigrant-advocacy group New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) from 2019 to 2023, leaving as its deputy director, according to the Queens Daily Eagle. Her official biography says she organized undocumented workers in Queens against wage theft and advocated for workplace safety legislation for construction workers.[4][3] Most recently before the Assembly she worked for the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), supporting union nurses and healthcare workers in contract campaigns; the Queens Daily Eagle describes this as communications work.[3][4] She joined the Democratic Socialists of America and worked with Mamdani on his 2020 Assembly campaign, according to the Queens Daily Eagle, which reported her 2025 campaign launch as her first run for office.[4]

Moreno won the February 3, 2026 special election with 74.1% of the vote over Rana Abdelhamid (Queens For All) and Mary Jobaida (People First Party). She assumed office on February 4, 2026, less than twenty-four hours later, to represent a district that includes Astoria and Long Island City; on June 23, 2026 she won the Democratic primary for a full term with 78.3%.[1][3][7] She is a member of the Assembly Committees on Aging, Agriculture, Real Property Taxation, Small Business, and Social Services, and of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus, the Legislative Women's Caucus, and the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force. Her campaign website lists endorsements that include Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the New York City Democratic Socialists of America.[6][2]

Her official biography lists volunteer work including starting free English classes at the Astoria Food Pantry, and says she became a mother in 2024 and lives in Astoria with her partner and son.[3]
