Biography
Walid Hakim is the South Carolina Green Party's nominee for governor, running with Arnold E. Karr. A veteran who joined the Marines, he has been affiliated at different times with several parties. He is running on a statewide high-speed rail system, year-round schooling and a government-backed insurance plan, without raising taxes.[1][2][3]
Basic profile — the most important sourced facts we found.
Hakim was born in Kuwait to an American mother, and WCSC reported that he joined the military as a Marine when Iraq invaded Kuwait.[3] The station reported that he has spent time in most of the major affiliations, including stints as a Republican and as a Democrat and a brief period with the Libertarian Party.[3] The South Carolina Green Party chose him as its nominee at its convention.[1]
Hakim says he supports the military but opposes the militarization of government agencies such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which he says have no place in South Carolina.[3] His proposals include a statewide high-speed rail system for people and cargo, a year-round approach to education and a government-backed insurance scheme.[3] He says none of this would require higher taxes and that every agency and program under his administration would be audited.[3]
