Biography

Stefany Shaheen is the Democratic nominee for New Hampshire's open 1st Congressional District and the daughter of retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. According to her campaign website, she is a co-founder of the health company Good Measures, the author of a best-selling book about her family's experience with type 1 diabetes, and a former Portsmouth city councilor who chaired the Portsmouth Police Commission. She is running on health care and affordability.[1][2][3]

Stefany Shaheen lives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where, according to her campaign website, she and her husband, Craig, raised their four children. She says she grew up in New Hampshire and built a small business there.[2][4] She is a graduate of Fairfield University, where she was a Division 1 scholarship athlete, and an alumna of MIT's Sloan School of Management and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, according to her campaign website.[2] She says she has spent more than 15 years advocating for medical research on chronic disease, motivated by her eldest daughter's type 1 diabetes diagnosis at age eight, and has helped raise millions of dollars for research.[2]

Shaheen co-founded Good Measures, a company that connects people with chronic conditions to clinical and decision-making support; her campaign website says it was awarded patents in the U.S. and ten other countries, and Citizens Count lists her as its co-founder and president.[2][5] She is the author of Elle & Coach, which her campaign website describes as a New York Times best-selling book about her family's experience with type 1 diabetes, and she says she served on the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition.[2]

Shaheen was elected to the Portsmouth City Council, where Citizens Count lists her service as 2014 to 2016; her campaign website cites her work on a downtown parking shortage and PFAS testing of the local water supply.[2][5] She later chaired the Portsmouth Police Commission, from 2019 to 2024 according to Citizens Count, and her campaign website says Gov. John Lynch appointed her to chair the state's Commission on the Status of Women.[2][5] She is also part of a bio-tech initiative in Manchester's millyard focused on regenerative medicine, according to her campaign website.[2]

Shaheen won the September 8, 2026 Democratic primary, defeating Sullivan, for the seat that Rep. Chris Pappas is leaving to run for U.S. Senate. She faces Republican Anthony DiLorenzo in the November 3 general election.[1][6]
