RU.S. Representative · AL-4

On the ballot Nov 3, 2026: U.S. House · Alabama's 4th Congressional District

Biography

Robert Aderholt is the incumbent Republican U.S. Representative for Alabama's 4th Congressional District, first elected in 1996. A Haleyville attorney, he served as a municipal judge and as an aide to Gov. Fob James before winning his seat. He sits on the House Appropriations Committee and chairs its Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies in the 119th Congress.[1][2]

Aderholt was born on July 22, 1965, in Haleyville, Alabama, and his official biography describes him as a product of Alabama's public schools. He attended the University of North Alabama from 1983 to 1984 and graduated from Birmingham-Southern College in 1987 with degrees in history and political science.[1][2] He earned a J.D. from Samford University's Cumberland School of Law in 1990 and worked as a lawyer.[1]

Before running for Congress, Aderholt served as Municipal Judge for Haleyville, a post Wikipedia says he was appointed to in 1992, and as Assistant Legal Advisor to Gov. Fob James. Wikipedia adds that he became the governor's top aide in 1995.[2][3] In 1996 he won the Republican primary and then the general election for the seat of retiring Democrat Tom Bevill, defeating Democrat Robert T. Wilson Jr., 49.9% to 48.2%.[1][3]

In the House, Aderholt serves on the Appropriations Committee, chairing its Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Subcommittee and also serving on its Agriculture and Defense subcommittees, according to his official biography. He also chairs the Values Action Team, a Congressional Member Organization focused on families, communities, and religious freedom.[2] The biography says he lives in Haleyville with his wife, Caroline; the couple have a daughter, Mary Elliott, and a son, Robert Hayes.[2]
