Biography

Rebecca Seawright is the Democratic and Working Families Party incumbent seeking re-election in Assembly District 76, covering the Upper East Side, Yorkville and Roosevelt Island. Before her 2014 election she worked as a state director of the National Women's Political Caucus and in government staff roles. She chairs the Assembly Aging Committee, and her official biography highlights work on aging, disability rights, education funding and the state Equal Rights Amendment.[1][2]

Wikipedia lists Seawright as born April 24, 1962, in Texas, and as holding a J.D. from the City University of New York; her official biography does not give her birthplace or education.[2] Before the Assembly, according to Wikipedia, she was New York State Director of the National Women's Political Caucus and a staffer in the New York State Assembly, and she worked in Washington, D.C., including for U.S. Sen. Lloyd Bentsen.[2] Her official biography says she formerly served eight years as Chair of the Board of the Feminist Press at the City University of New York and currently chairs the CUNY Law School Board of Visitors; in 2023 Speaker Carl Heastie appointed her to the CUNY Construction Fund Board of Trustees.[1]

In 2014 Seawright entered the race for the open seat of Assemblyman Micah Kellner, defeating Gus Christensen, Ed Hartzog and David Menegon in the Democratic primary and then Republican-line candidate David Garland in the general election; she took office January 1, 2015.[3][2] According to her official biography, she was the first woman elected to represent the 76th Assembly District, which it says has about 140,000 constituents and the largest concentration of older New Yorkers in Manhattan.[1]

The Speaker appointed Seawright Chair of the Aging Committee in 2025, and she sits on the Ways and Means, Codes, Higher Education and Judiciary committees.[1] She previously chaired the People with Disabilities Committee, the Majority Steering Committee and the Task Force on Women's Issues, and served as Secretary of the Majority Conference.[1] She serves as a Director of the Legislative Women's Caucus and participates in the Bipartisan Pro-Choice, Jewish, Environmental and Gun Reform legislative caucuses.[1] Seawright was the Assembly lead sponsor of the amendment adding an Equal Rights Amendment to the New York State Constitution, which voters ratified in the 2024 general election; her official biography also lists signed bills on 3-D mammography coverage, the Clean Waterways Fund and tolerance training for those convicted of hate crimes.[1]
