Biography
Rashida Harrison is the Democratic candidate for Michigan State Senate District 28 in the November 3, 2026 general election, having advanced from the August 4 Democratic primary.[1] An assistant professor, she said in a Ballotpedia survey that she has taught social policy and theory at Michigan State University's James Madison College for over a decade.[1][2]
Harrison earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 2012.[1] In a Ballotpedia survey, she described herself as a scholar, educator, solo mother and community organizer with a Ph.D. in African American and African Studies.[2] She said she is a trained doula and the founder of Conduit Collective, a Black-led equity consulting practice.[2]
Harrison's survey listed reproductive freedom and maternal health among her key messages, including expanding access to prenatal and postpartum care.[2] She also pointed to the cost of living for working families, saying a single parent with one child in Michigan needs nearly $77,000 a year to meet basic needs.[2]
