Biography

Mike Rogers is a former U.S. Army officer and FBI special agent who served in the Michigan Senate and then in the U.S. House for Michigan's 8th District from 2001 to 2015, where he chaired the House Intelligence Committee. After leaving Congress he owned a business and worked as a cybersecurity professional. He was the Republican nominee for Senate in 2024, losing narrowly to Elissa Slotkin, and is the 2026 Republican nominee.[1][2][3]

Mike Rogers was born on June 2, 1963, in Livingston County, Michigan, where he grew up; his family settled in Brighton Township. He graduated from Howell High School in 1981 and from Adrian College in 1985, worked at a factory and served in the U.S. Army from 1985 to 1989.[1][2][4] He then worked as an FBI special agent in the Chicago field office from 1989 to 1994, specializing in organized crime and public corruption, before entering politics.[1][2][4]

Rogers was elected to the Michigan Senate in 1994 and re-elected in 1998, representing District 26 (Clinton, Livingston and Shiawassee counties) from 1995 to 2000, and he was the primary sponsor of the law creating the Michigan Education Savings Program. In 2000 he won election to Michigan's 8th Congressional District, defeating Democrat Dianne Byrum 48.8% to 48.7%, a margin of 111 votes, and he served until 2015.[1][4] In the House he served on the Energy and Commerce Committee and chaired the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence from 2011 to 2015, and in 2011 he introduced the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act. On March 27, 2014, he announced that he would not seek re-election, and he planned to join the talk radio company Cumulus.[1][2][4]

After leaving Congress, Rogers owned a business and worked as a cybersecurity professional, joined CNN as a national security commentator and hosted radio and television programs. He served on the Mitre Corporation board from 2016 to 2023, as chairman from 2021. Ballotpedia says he is married and has two children.[1][4]

Rogers announced a 2024 Senate run in August 2023, won the Republican primary and lost the general election to Slotkin, 48.6% to 48.3%, a margin of about 19,000 votes.[1][4] He announced his 2026 candidacy on April 14, 2025, for the seat Sen. Gary Peters is leaving, and won the August 4, 2026 Republican primary unopposed.[2][3] His campaign website proposes expanding 529 savings plans to cover first-time home down payments, letting renters build credit for on-time rent and cutting regulations on home building. His announcement also named countering cyber threats from Russia, China and Iran as a priority.[1][2]
