Mike Hilgers

RCandidate

On the ballot Nov 3, 2026: Attorney General of Nebraska

Biography

Mike Hilgers is the Republican incumbent Nebraska Attorney General, seeking a second term. A lawyer who founded his own litigation firm and later served in the Legislature, including as Speaker, he says he wants to see through pending matters such as a U.S. Supreme Court case over Colorado's South Platte River water and his litigation against TikTok.[1][3]

Hilgers graduated from the University of Chicago Law School, where he was an editor of the law review, and then clerked for Judge Edith Clement of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.[3] He practiced law for more than fifteen years, handling complex litigation and discovery disputes in state and federal court; after working at a large firm he founded his own litigation firm, which had more than 100 professionals when he left it to take office.[3]

Hilgers served six years in the Nebraska Legislature representing District 21 in northwest Lincoln and Lancaster County, including his last two years as Speaker.[1][3] He was elected Attorney General in 2022 with 69.7% of the vote, defeating Larry Bolinger of the Legal Marijuana Now Party, and became Nebraska's 33rd Attorney General.[2][3]

As Attorney General, Hilgers has described his approach as trying to "really conserve our democratic republic" by upholding the U.S. and Nebraska constitutions.[1] His office has pursued legal action against companies and governments including Google, Meta, TikTok, Temu, General Motors and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and he has said he has built the "best pound-for-pound law firm" in the country.[1] Hilgers lives in Lincoln with his wife, Heather, and their four children.[3]
