Biography

Michael Tannousis is the Republican and Conservative Assembly Member for District 64, first elected in 2020. A lawyer and former Bronx and Richmond County assistant district attorney who began in public service as an aide to City Council Minority Leader James Oddo, he describes his priorities as protecting crime victims, changing recent bail and judicial-discretion reforms, and affordability.[1][2][3]

Tannousis describes himself as a lifelong Staten Islander and the son of Greek immigrants who came to the U.S. after being displaced by armed conflict in Cyprus.[1][2] He graduated from Public School 23, Intermediate School 24 and Monsignor Farrell High School, earned an undergraduate degree from SUNY Binghamton, and received a J.D. from Pace Law School.[1]

Tannousis began his public-service career in 2006 as an aide to then-Minority Leader James Oddo of the New York City Council, and his Assembly biography also lists service as Counsel to City Council Member Joseph Borelli.[1][2] After law school he became an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx DA's office in 2011, then joined the Richmond County DA's office in 2016 under DA Michael McMahon, where he prosecuted violent-crime and narcotics cases.[2][1]

Tannousis was elected to the Assembly on November 3, 2020, defeating Democrat Brandon Patterson for the seat previously held by Nicole Malliotakis, and took office on January 1, 2021.[1][3] He was re-elected in 2022 and 2024 and is the Republican and Conservative nominee in 2026; his district covers parts of Southern Brooklyn and the East Shore of Staten Island.[1][3] In 2025-2026 he is assigned to the Cities, Codes, Governmental Employees and Judiciary committees.[3]

According to his Assembly biography, Tannousis previously served as a board member of the Cyprus-US Chamber of Commerce and as a delegate for the Cyprus Federation of America, and he lives in the Great Kills neighborhood with his wife.[1]
