Biography

Luke Bronin is the Democratic nominee for Connecticut's 1st Congressional District. A Yale-educated lawyer and Navy Reserve veteran, he worked at the U.S. Treasury Department and as general counsel to Gov. Dannel Malloy before serving two terms as Mayor of Hartford (2016-2024). He defeated incumbent Rep. John Larson in the August 2026 Democratic primary, and his campaign website emphasizes costs, health care, housing, immigration reform and anti-corruption measures.[1][2][3][4][5]

Bronin was born June 30, 1979, in Westchester County, New York, and attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire.[5] He earned a bachelor's degree and a law degree (J.D.) from Yale University, and a master's degree from Balliol College, Oxford, which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar.[5][4] He served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve and deployed to Afghanistan from September 2010 to April 2011 as part of the military's anti-corruption task force, leaving active service as a lieutenant.[5][4]

After law school, Bronin worked at The Hartford insurance company, first as associate counsel and then as chief of staff to the president of its Property and Casualty Division.[5] He then served in President Barack Obama's first-term Treasury Department, first as senior advisor to Deputy Secretary Neal Wolin and then as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes. His campaign website says he was part of the team that created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.[5][4] In January 2013 he became general counsel to Gov. Dannel Malloy, and in December 2014 the law firm Hinckley Allen announced he would join as a partner.[5]

Bronin was elected Mayor of Hartford in 2015 after defeating incumbent Pedro Segarra in the Democratic primary, was re-elected in 2019, and served from 2016 to 2024; he did not run for re-election in 2023. His campaign website says he led the effort to stabilize the city's finances and created the Hartford Youth Service Corps.[2][5][4] He ran for Governor of Connecticut in 2018 and suspended that campaign on April 16, 2018.[2]

Bronin announced his run for Congress on July 30, 2025, and won the Democratic Party's endorsement convention on May 11, 2026. He defeated incumbent Rep. John Larson, Jillian Gilchrest, and Ruth Fortune in the August 11, 2026 Democratic primary with 53.5% of the vote.[5][1][2]
