Biography

Lindsay "Rubia" Garcia of Walker is a Democratic candidate and educator with more than two decades of experience, including as a social studies teacher in New Orleans, who built a large social media following speaking about education issues. She is a graduate of Southern University Law Center. According to her campaign biography, she is running on affordability, infrastructure, healthcare and social justice.[1][2][3][4]

Garcia was born and raised in Louisiana, according to her submitted biography.[1] She has worked as an educator for more than two decades in classrooms, government programs and community organizations, and the Louisiana Illuminator's voter guide says she taught social studies in New Orleans before earning a law degree.[1][2][3] She served military families through the U.S. Department of Defense's Morale, Welfare, and Recreation program.[1][2] She has built a social media following of more than one million people speaking about education in Louisiana, according to her biography.[1]

After the 2019 Hard Rock Hotel collapse in New Orleans, which killed three workers, Garcia organized community forums and boycotts; she also says she drove more than 30,000 miles to support communities seeking justice for George Floyd.[1][2] She graduated from Southern University Law Center with the Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship and interned with VOTE (Voice of the Experienced), which works to restore rights for currently and formerly incarcerated people.[1][2][4]
