Biography
Lew Wasserman is the Democratic candidate for Florida State Senate District 22 in the November 3, 2026 general election, in a race with Republican James Buchanan and Martin Hyde, who has no party affiliation.[1][2] In a Ballotpedia survey, he described himself as an attorney, educator and public servant.[3]
Lew Wasserman said in a Ballotpedia survey that he earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Hofstra University and a J.D. from St. John's University, which he attended at night.[3] He said that, as an attorney, he worked on class-action and constitutional cases, including cases on the rights of children with disabilities and of people facing workplace discrimination.[3] Before practicing law, he said, he was an assistant superintendent of schools in a district serving more than 10,000 students, and he later taught graduate courses at the University of Texas.[3]
Wasserman advanced from the August 18, 2026 Democratic primary without appearing on the ballot because the primary was canceled.[2] In the survey, he named housing and insurance affordability, local control of local decisions, and protection of water, wetlands and natural lands in Sarasota and Manatee counties as key campaign messages.[3] He also said he supports expanding Medicaid and using the state's purchasing and regulatory power to address health care costs, including prescription drug prices.[3]
