On the ballot Nov 3, 2026: NY State Assembly · District 55

Biography

Latrice Walker is the Democratic and Working Families Party incumbent for Assembly District 55, which includes Brownsville, Ocean Hill and part of East New York. A Brownsville native and attorney who previously worked as counsel to Rep. Yvette Clarke, she won the seat in 2014 and chairs the Assembly's Election Law Committee. Her official biography describes her as the driving force behind the 2019 bail reform law, and she is unopposed in the November 2026 general election.[1][2][3]

Latrice Walker was born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn; her official biography says she grew up in the Prospect Plaza Houses, a public housing development, and she now lives in Ocean Hill-Brownsville.[2][3] Wikipedia lists Prospect Plaza Houses as a NYCHA development and says she attended Brooklyn Technical High School.[3] She holds a law degree from Pace University School of Law, and Wikipedia also lists a bachelor's degree from SUNY Purchase College.[2][3]

Walker practiced as an attorney representing people targeted by the NYPD's stop-and-frisk tactic and tenants, including NYCHA residents, facing eviction, and she worked with advocates and elected officials on preserving affordable housing.[2] She was counsel to U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke before entering the Assembly, a role Wikipedia describes as chief counsel.[2][3] In 2014 she ran in the Democratic primary for the open District 55 seat, which had become vacant after Assemblyman William Boyland Jr. was found guilty of corruption and resigned, and Wikipedia reports that she won a seven-way primary with just under 40% of the vote.[3] She won the November 4, 2014 general election with 92.4% of the vote, according to Ballotpedia, and was sworn in on January 1, 2015.[1][3]

Walker chairs the Assembly's Election Law Committee and serves on the Housing, Judiciary, Codes and Ways and Means committees, and her official biography lists voting rights, criminal justice reform, environmental justice, affordable housing and tenants' rights among her issues.[2] Her official biography says she is best known for being the engine behind the 2019 bail reform law, which eliminated cash bail for most misdemeanors and non-violent felonies, and that she went on a 19-day hunger strike against proposed rollbacks; NY1 reported in March 2022 that she was on a hunger strike over proposed bail-law changes.[2][4] According to the same biography, she mentors young people and seniors in the district, has a daughter, is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and belongs to Wayside Baptist Church.[2]
