On the ballot Nov 3, 2026: NY State Assembly · District 31

Biography

Khaleel Anderson is the incumbent Democratic and Working Families Party Assembly member for District 31 in southeast Queens, elected in November 2020.[1][2] A community organizer from the Rockaways, he began organizing as a teenager and served on Queens Community Board 14 before entering the Assembly at age 24. He is running unopposed in the November 3, 2026 general election.[1][2]

Anderson was born in Brooklyn and raised in the Rockaways, and he lives in Far Rockaway, Queens. He earned a bachelor's degree from Queens College in 2019, according to Ballotpedia; the Assembly biography says he was finalizing a master's degree in Urban Affairs there, with a minor in Cities and Social Medicine.[3][2][4] He began as a community organizer at age 13, and in 2011 he was an organizer for a local nonprofit that trains cohorts of youth in civic engagement.[3][2]

Before his election Anderson worked as a student and community activist and helped build a half-acre urban farm that provides fresh produce, healthy-eating workshops and trainings, and jobs for young people. He was the youngest member of Queens Community Board 14 and of his local Police Precinct Council during his tenure.[2] He won the open Assembly District 31 seat in the November 2020 general election at age 24 against Republican Joseph Cullina, according to his campaign website's reprint of a news report. His campaign site and the Assembly describe him as the youngest Black Assembly member in New York State history.[1][2]

According to his Assembly biography, Anderson was named a 2021 Lindsay Fellow in Government Leadership and Practice.[2] He chairs the Assembly Task Force on Food, Farm & Nutrition Policy and serves on the Children and Families, Energy, Environmental Conservation, Insurance, Labor, and People with Disabilities committees in the 2025-2026 session.[5] His biography lists housing and healthcare justice, criminal justice reform, educational equity, transportation equity and environmental justice among his priorities, and he also cites food insecurity and disaster preparedness.[2]
