On the ballot Nov 3, 2026: NY State Assembly · District 87
Karines Reyes is the Democratic and Working Families Party nominee for re-election in NY Assembly District 87, a seat she has held since January 2019. A registered nurse who served on a hospital union executive committee, she was first elected in 2018 and serves on the Codes, Health, Higher Education, Labor, Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, and Social Services committees. Her campaign website says she is focused on affordable healthcare, affordable housing and protecting immigrant families.[1][2][4]
Karines Reyes was born in the Los Minas neighborhood of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; her family moved to Carolina, Puerto Rico in her early childhood, and she immigrated to the United States with her mother at age 6, settling in Corona, Queens.[3] She attended the High School of Art and Design, graduating with honors, then studied communications at CUNY Baruch College; Ballotpedia lists an associate degree from Bronx Community College and a bachelor's degree from Baruch College.[1][3] Before nursing, she worked at Mount Sinai Hospital in Health Information Management, for Aramark at Mount Sinai, and as an admissions coordinator in its Physical Therapy Department.[3] She obtained her nursing degree by 2013, according to her official biography.[3]
Reyes began her nursing career at Montefiore Hospital on the in-patient oncology ward, earned a chemotherapy infusion certification and worked as an infusion nurse at the Eastchester Cancer Center; her official biography describes her as a registered nurse in the Oncology Department at Montefiore Einstein Hospital.[1][3] She served on the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) executive committee at Einstein Hospital as vice chair of the bargaining unit, and lobbied for safer nurse-to-patient ratios and single-payer health care in New York State.[3] As a student nurse she volunteered in Haiti after the earthquake, and after Hurricane Maria she served as a volunteer nurse with the first group of medical professionals deployed to Puerto Rico by New York State.[3]
Reyes was first elected to the Assembly on November 6, 2018, on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines, in an open-seat race against Alpheaus Marcus (R) and Michael Dennis; she assumed office on January 1, 2019, succeeding Luis Sepúlveda, and was re-elected in 2020, 2022 and 2024.[1] She is currently assigned to the Assembly's Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Codes, Higher Education, Health, Labor and Social Services committees, and says her work on the Health Committee informs her focus on healthcare access.[1][5] According to her campaign website, she worked with Assemblymember Amanda Septimo to secure the first state fund dedicated to Latino-serving organizations (the LUCHA Equity Fund) and fought for a federal RAISE grant to begin the process of capping the Cross Bronx Expressway.[4] The site also says she has been part of the Bronx community for nearly 30 years.[4]
