Biography

Jonny Larsen is the Democratic nominee for Utah's 4th Congressional District, facing Republican Rep. Mike Kennedy. A Marine Corps combat veteran who grew up in Salt Lake City, he later worked as a systems and network administrator. His campaign emphasizes the cost of living, Medicare and Social Security, veterans' health care and banning stock trading by elected officials.[1][2]

Larsen grew up in a Salt Lake City trailer park; he says his mother placed him in a group home at age thirteen and that his grandmother then took him in.[1] He says he began working at twelve delivering newspapers for the Deseret News and was a night supervisor at Cinnabon by sixteen, and he graduated from West High School.[1]

Larsen enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at seventeen and served from 2000 to 2004.[1] He says he deployed to Iraq twice, with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines and then 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, and fought in the Battle of Husaybah.[1] The Salt Lake Tribune describes him as a combat veteran who calls himself a "Blue Dog Democrat."[2]

After leaving the Marines, Larsen built a career as a senior systems and network administrator in information technology.[1] He used the GI Bill to study applied math and physics at the University of Utah but, according to his candidate survey, ran out of funding before finishing.[1] He lives in Salt Lake City and says he is a VA patient and a cancer survivor treated by the VA.[1]
