Biography

Jessica González-Rojas is the Assemblymember for District 34 in Queens and the Democratic and Working Families Party candidate for the open New York State Senate District 13 seat, after defeating incumbent Jessica Ramos in the June 2026 Democratic primary.[1][2][3] She spent more than 13 years at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, including as Executive Director, before her 2020 election to the Assembly, where she chairs the Task Force on Women's Issues.[1][2][3] She has said she is running on healthcare access and protecting immigrant communities.[1][2][3]

González-Rojas was born in Queens and lives in Jackson Heights with her partner and son, according to her Assembly biography.[1][3] She earned a bachelor's degree in international relations from Boston University, graduating cum laude, and a master's degree from the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service with a concentration in public and nonprofit management and public policy; she also holds a nonprofit management certificate from Columbia Business School's Executive Leadership Program.[1][3] She served in leadership for more than 13 years at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, formerly the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, including as Executive Director, before running for office.[3]

Her Assembly biography says González-Rojas has taught as an adjunct professor at the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and CUNY's City College, and that she is an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the NYU School of Law.[3] In her 2020 Ballotpedia candidate survey she described herself as a community organizer, a founding board member of New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) in Jackson Heights and a co-founder of the New Visions Democratic Club, and said that in 2002 she became the first Latina to represent her community on the Democratic Party's State Committee.[1] She won the June 23, 2020 Democratic primary for Assembly District 34, defeating incumbent Michael DenDekker and three other candidates, then won the November 2020 general election over William Marquez.[1][4] She took office in 2021 as the first person of color, woman of color and Latina to represent the district, according to her Assembly welcome letter, and was re-elected in 2022 and 2024.[1][3][4]

In the Assembly, González-Rojas represents a Queens district that includes Astoria, Corona, East Elmhurst, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Woodside.[3] For the 2025-2026 session she serves on the Children and Families, Cities, Corporations Authorities and Commissions, Environmental Conservation, Health, and Social Services committees, and she was appointed Chair of the Task Force on Women's Issues.[1][2][3] Her official biography also lists her as Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Trafficking and Board Secretary of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus.[3] The biography credits her as prime sponsor of the Universal School Meals Act and says she secured $25 million in the 2024 state budget to codify the Reproductive Freedom and Equity Fund and backed Sammy's Law.[3] She serves as Northeast Region Chair on the board of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators and on the board of If/When/How, a national reproductive-justice nonprofit network of law students and lawyers.[3]
