Born in the Dominican Republic, he was educated there and in Madrid, Spain, and describes himself as a local entrepreneur and job creator. He first won the seat in 2022, defeating the incumbent in the Democratic primary, and his campaign website cites affordable housing, public safety, racial justice and economic growth.[1][2][3]

Alvarez was born in the Dominican Republic, and his official biography describes a modest upbringing in a single-parent home.[1] He earned a bachelor's degree in computer science at a university in the Dominican Republic and a master's degree in logistics in Madrid, Spain, plus a Harvard certification in cybersecurity, according to the same biography.[1] He describes himself as a successful local entrepreneur and job creator and as a longtime Bronx resident who worked as an activist on jobs, housing and social justice.[1][4][5]

Alvarez served as a member of Bronx Community Board 1, according to his official Assembly biography.[1] In June 2020 he ran for the Assembly District 79 seat in the Democratic primary, finishing third with 21.6% of the vote; Chantel Jackson won that primary.[3] Two years later he won the June 28, 2022 Democratic primary for Assembly District 78, defeating incumbent Jose Rivera and Emmanuel Martinez (47.1% to 28.1% and 24.2%), and then won the November 2022 general election with 80.8% over Republican Michael Dister.[3]
