Biography
Eugene (Gene) Douglass is the Republican nominee challenging incumbent Deborah Ross in North Carolina's 2nd Congressional District. He describes himself as a retired chemistry professor and has run for federal office in Hawaii, New Hampshire, and, in the 2024 Republican primary, North Carolina's 2nd District.[1][2][3]
Eugene Douglass graduated from Swarthmore High School.[1] He earned a bachelor's degree from The King's College in 1979 (in chemistry and math, according to his questionnaire), a graduate degree from the University of Connecticut in 1982, and a Ph.D. in fiber and polymer science from North Carolina State University in 2010. He also graduated from Bethel Theological Seminary in San Diego.[1][2] In a 2024 News & Observer candidate questionnaire, he listed his professional experience as a college/university chemistry professor and his current occupation as consultant, and his campaign newsletter describes him as a retired chemistry professor.[2][3] Ballotpedia lists his professional experience as scientist and notes an affiliation with the American Chemistry Society.[1]
According to his 2024 questionnaire, Douglass ran for U.S. Senate in Hawaii in 1998 and 2000 and for New Hampshire's 2nd Congressional District in 2002.[2] He ran in the March 5, 2024 Republican primary for North Carolina's 2nd Congressional District, which Alan Swain won.[1] In 2026 he became the Republican nominee for the district.[1][3]
