Biography
Eli Savit is the Democratic nominee for Michigan Attorney General and the Washtenaw County prosecuting attorney, elected in 2020. A former public school teacher, he clerked for Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg and served as senior legal counsel for the City of Detroit before his election as prosecutor.[1]
Savit was born and raised in Ann Arbor, the son of two educators.[1][3] He attended Kalamazoo College, where he played four years of college basketball, and then taught special-education and general-education 8th-grade U.S. history in a public school.[3] After graduating from the University of Michigan Law School, he worked for two federal judges and was then selected to clerk on the U.S. Supreme Court for Justices O'Connor (ret.) and Ginsburg.[1][3]
Savit later became senior legal counsel for the City of Detroit, where his campaign says he oversaw the city's opioid-industry lawsuits and a right-to-literacy case on behalf of Detroit schoolchildren.[1] He was elected Washtenaw County prosecuting attorney in 2020.[1] The Michigan Democratic Party chose him as its attorney general nominee at its April 19, 2026 convention, where he won the nomination over Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald.[2]
