Biography

Christina Bohannan is the Democratic nominee, an engineer-turned-law professor at the University of Iowa who served one term in the Iowa House (2021-2023). She lost to Miller-Meeks in 2022 and by 799 votes in 2024 and is challenging her for a third time. Her campaign centers on lowering costs and reducing the influence of special-interest money in Congress.[1][2][3]

Bohannan grew up in a small town in a family she describes as non-political; her father was a construction worker and her mother worked part-time at a daycare. She says she was the first in her family to go to college.[4] She earned a degree in environmental engineering and a law degree, both from the University of Florida, and says she graduated first in her law school class. According to Wikipedia, she worked as an environmental engineer with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, specializing in water quality, and then clerked for a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.[5][4][3] She has taught at the University of Iowa College of Law since about 2000, and, according to Wikipedia, served as president of its faculty senate.[5][4][3]

Bohannan won the 2020 Democratic primary for Iowa House District 85, defeating incumbent Vicki Lensing, and served in the Iowa House from 2021 to 2023, including on the Natural Resources and Veterans Affairs committees.[5][4][3] She was the 2022 Democratic nominee for Iowa's 1st District, losing to Miller-Meeks 53.4 to 46.6 percent, and lost the 2024 rematch 50.0 to 49.8 percent, a margin of just under 800 votes.[1][3][6]

Bohannan announced a third run in June 2025 and won the June 2026 Democratic primary. According to Wikipedia, she is married, has a daughter, and lives in Iowa City.[3][6]
