DAssembly Member · District 79

On the ballot Nov 3, 2026: NY State Assembly · District 79

Biography

Chantel Jackson is the incumbent Democratic Assembly Member for District 79 in the Bronx, seeking a fourth term. A licensed social worker and former college advisor, she first won the seat in 2020. She chairs the New York State Legislative Women's Caucus and previously chaired the Black Legislative Task Force, and her official biography lists maternal health, economic development, mental health and youth development as her focus areas.[1][2][3]

Jackson was born in Harlem and raised in a close-knit family; her mother immigrated from Belize and her late father, who died in 2022, was an entrepreneur and CEO of WIBO.[1][2] In her 2020 Ballotpedia survey she described herself as living in the South Bronx.[2] She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the City College of New York and a Master of Social Work from Adelphi University (Ballotpedia lists 2014).[1][2] She spent nine years working with low-income, first-generation students on college access and financial aid before becoming a social worker.[1][2]

Jackson worked as a licensed social worker in New York City public high schools for four years, and has also taught at the college level and written a book, according to her official biography and 2020 survey.[1][2] She won the June 2020 Democratic primary for the open Assembly District 79 seat with 25.9% of the vote in a six-candidate field, and the November 2020 general election with 89.8%; Ballotpedia lists her term as beginning January 1, 2021.[2] She was re-elected in 2022 (87.1% over Republican Richard Bryan) and in 2024 (80.1% over Republican Sharon Darby and Conservative Party candidate Emmanuel Findlay Jr.).[2]

Jackson's district includes Concourse Village, Melrose, Morrisania, Claremont, Belmont and East Tremont, and she sits on the Assembly's Cities, Education, Housing, Mental Health, and Small Business committees and chairs the Subcommittee on Micro Business.[3][1] She chaired the New York State Black Legislative Task Force during what her official biography calls the past legislative session, and the biography says she helped secure a $30 million investment for underserved communities and has chaired the Legislative Women's Caucus since June 2025.[3] She championed A7713, on adolescent offender case processing.[4] Her official biography says she organized two buses of Bronx students to Invest Fest in Atlanta in August 2024 and hosted The Next Wave Career Summit in February 2026; it describes her as a licensed social worker, college professor, published author and mother of two.[3]
