Biography

Alfred "Al" Taylor is the Democratic and Working Families Party nominee for re-election in Assembly District 71, running unopposed. A pastor and former Assembly chief of staff, he has represented the district, covering Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood, since winning a November 2017 special election. He serves on the Banks, Codes, Education, Election Law, Labor and Rules committees.[1][2][3]

In a 2020 interview, Taylor said he serves and lives in the same district he grew up in, and described himself as a former military police officer.[4] He earned a B.A. in Public Communication from Lehman College, a Master of Divinity from Nyack College Alliance Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate of Ministry from Northeastern Seminary.[2] Before his election, Taylor served as Chief of Staff to former Assemblyman Herman "Denny" Farrell Jr. and as a Democratic district leader, and the Assembly biography cites more than 20 years of advocacy experience; in the 2020 interview he said he had worked for 27 years for the legislator he replaced.[2][4]

In 2008 Taylor founded the "Man Up! in Harlem" anti-gun-violence program, organizing weekly prayer walks at Rucker Park; according to his Assembly biography the model was later replicated in other Upper Manhattan housing projects.[2] He is the pastor of Infinity Mennonite Church in Harlem; in 2020 he said he was in his 12th year of pastoring there and is not a salaried pastor.[2][4]

Taylor won the November 7, 2017 special election, unopposed, for the seat vacated when Herman Farrell resigned on September 5, 2017, and took office that fall; he was re-elected in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024.[1] He is a member of the Black Task Force and the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus.[3] According to his Assembly biography, legislation he introduced and supported that became law includes a requirement that childcare services adopt anaphylaxis policies, creation of the Law Enforcement Misconduct Investigative Office, and the "Make Voting Easy Act" on early voting polling places.[2] The biography also says he walked 780 miles to Chicago in the "It's A Love Thing Always" event, and that he is married to Gwendolyn, has five children and lives in Northern Manhattan.[2]
