David Stumbo

Stumbo earned a bachelor's degree from Toccoa Falls College and a law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law.[1] He began his prosecutorial career as an assistant solicitor in the 11th Judicial Circuit, prosecuting a wide range of criminal cases.[1] He then joined the South Carolina Attorney General's Office, where his work included prosecuting internet crimes against children cases and supervising the state grand jury.[1]

Stumbo was elected solicitor of the 8th Judicial Circuit, which covers Abbeville, Greenwood, Laurens and Newberry counties, and is serving his fourth term.[1][3][4] He has cited more than two decades as a prosecutor, and his campaign has emphasized gun and gang violence in the Upstate and support for a bill bringing RICO-style investigative techniques to statewide grand juries.[2][4] He also supports judicial reform that would have judges nominated by the governor and confirmed by legislators, as in the federal system.[4]

Stumbo won the June 23, 2026 Republican runoff over state Sen. Stephen Goldfinch with 54.9 percent of the vote and faces Democratic nominee Richard Hricik on November 3.[5]
