Biography

John James is the U.S. Representative for Michigan's 10th District and the Republican nominee for governor, with running mate Jay DeBoyer. A West Point graduate and former Army Apache pilot, he led his family's logistics company before running for the U.S. Senate in 2018 and 2020 and winning his House seat in 2022. His platform calls for eliminating the state income tax, lower energy costs, school choice and a parents' bill of rights, and full funding for law enforcement.[1][2][3][4]

Basic profile — the most important sourced facts we found.

James was born in Southfield and raised in Detroit. He graduated from West Point in 2004 and spent eight years in the Army as an aviation officer, with combat tours in Iraq.[2][4][8] He later earned a master's degree from Penn State and an MBA from the University of Michigan.[2][8]

James then went into business with James Group International, a Detroit supply-chain company, where he became president and chief executive of its subsidiary Renaissance Global Logistics.[2][8]

He was the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in 2018 and 2020, losing to Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters.[2] James was elected to the U.S. House in 2022, taking office on January 3, 2023, and was re-elected in 2024.[2][8]
