Said boys do not belong in girls' sports or locker rooms, but also called Indiana's 2022 ban 'unnecessary' and stood by supporting then-Gov. Holcomb's veto of it, saying sports organizations were handling the issue.[5]

Biography

Greg Ballard is the Lincoln Party candidate for Indiana Secretary of State. A former Republican mayor of Indianapolis (2008–2016) and retired Marine Corps lieutenant colonel, he started the new party to run, and says he is courting independent voters.[1][2][3][4]

Basic profile — the most important sourced facts we found.

Ballard earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Indiana University Bloomington and a master's degree in military science from Marine Corps University.[6][2] He served in the Marine Corps from 1978 to 2001, fought in the Persian Gulf War, received the Legion of Merit and retired as a lieutenant colonel after 23 years.[6][2]

Ballard was elected mayor of Indianapolis as a Republican and served two terms, from 2008 to 2016.[2][6] The Indiana Capital Chronicle describes him as a lifelong Republican.[4]

In March 2026 he launched an independent campaign for secretary of state, using the label "Lincoln Party" on petition forms.[4] He argues that he is the most experienced candidate in the race, saying of his opponents: "They've never led anything of significance in their lives, and I have."[2]

Priorities

  • Restore stability and dignity to the office, with an audit that emphasizes travel expenses.[8]
  • Mail a paper voter guide to every registered voter, backed by a software app, at a cost the Capital Chronicle puts at up to $2.5 million per election cycle.[8]
  • Make it easier for independents to run: he says his party offers 'hope to people who actually want to run for office without punitive signature requirements.'[8]
