Basic profile — the most important sourced facts we found.
Gonzalez says she was the first in her immediate family to graduate from college and law school; her father works in residential construction and her mother is a former Girl Scout troop leader who has worked at Costco for more than three decades.[1] She is an attorney, has taught election law at the University of Denver, and has run a small business in Colorado.[1][3]
Before holding office, Gonzalez was executive director of Colorado Common Cause.[1][2] Her campaign says that, in that role and later as clerk, she helped draft the 2018 constitutional amendments creating independent redistricting commissions, the 2019 automatic voter registration law, a 2020 law ending prison gerrymandering, a 2021 law expanding multilingual ballots, and a 2024 law requiring in-person voting in every county jail.[3]
Gonzalez is Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder, an office that serves nearly 600,000 residents.[1][4] Her campaign says the county cast more votes than any other Colorado county in 2023 and 2025 despite ranking fourth in population, that her office's election work received Election Assistance Commission Clearinghouse Awards in 2023, 2024 and 2025, and that her office stopped an effort to remove 23,000 county voters from the rolls.[3] She is the first Latina and first openly LGBTQ person elected Jefferson County Clerk.[1][2] She won the Democratic primary for Secretary of State on June 30, 2026, with 64.4 percent of the vote against Jessie Danielson.[1] Her campaign says she calls Jefferson County home.[3]
