Biography
Zuhdi Jasser is a Phoenix physician and retired U.S. Navy lieutenant commander, and the Republican nominee for Arizona's 4th Congressional District. The son of Syrian immigrants, he founded the American Islamic Forum for Democracy and co-founded the Muslim Reform Movement.[1][3]
Jasser was born on November 17, 1967, in Canton, Ohio, to parents who fled Syria in 1966, and he was raised near Appleton, Wisconsin; Ballotpedia lists Neenah High School as his high school.[3][1][2] He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1992, as part of an accelerated program funded by a full U.S. Navy scholarship, according to his campaign website.[1][3]
Jasser served in the Navy as a medical officer from 1988 to 1999, retiring as a lieutenant commander. His campaign website says his tours included the USS El Paso and the Office of the Attending Physician to Congress, and that he was honorably discharged in 1999 after 11 years of service. In his Ballotpedia survey he lists the Meritorious Service Medal.[1][3] He moved to Phoenix with his wife, Gada, joined his father's medical practice and later founded the Jasser Center for Comprehensive Care. He says he has practiced medicine for over two decades.[3][1]
Jasser founded the American Islamic Forum for Democracy in 2003 and co-founded the Muslim Reform Movement, and says he has testified before Congress. He describes himself in his Ballotpedia survey as a former president of the Arizona Medical Association and a U.S. Senate appointee to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, on which he served as vice chair. Wikipedia says Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell appointed him to a two-year term in March 2012.[3][1][2] Ballotpedia also lists affiliations with the Maricopa County Board of Health, the Area Agency on Aging and NotMyKid. His campaign website says he and his wife have three children.[1][3]
