Biography

Steve Chan is the Republican and Conservative Party incumbent for New York State Senate District 17 in southwest Brooklyn, and he also appears on the "Stop Mamdani Party" line.[1][2][3] A Hong Kong-born retired NYPD sergeant and Marine Corps veteran, he defeated Democratic incumbent Iwen Chu in November 2024, flipping the seat, and is seeking a second term against Democrat Larry He.[1][2][3][4]

Chan was born in Hong Kong, immigrated to the United States at age 11 and settled in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where he has lived for 47 years, including 32 years in Bensonhurst.[2][3][4] He attended PS 102 in Bay Ridge, JHS 259 William McKinley and Fort Hamilton High School, then SUNY Empire State College.[2] He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1984 to 1990.[3] He joined the NYPD in 1993 and retired as a sergeant in 2020 after 27 years.[2][3]

Chan also owned and operated a small florist shop in Sunset Park for 10 years and provided free notary services to neighbors.[2] He has been active in local schools as a school leadership team parent, Title I chairperson and PTA president, and he is married with two daughters in public school.[2][3]

In 2024 Chan won the Republican and Conservative lines without a primary and defeated incumbent Iwen Chu, who ran on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines, in the November general election, taking office on January 1, 2025.[1][3][4] In the 2025–2026 session he was assigned to the Cities 1 Committee (ranking member), the New York City Education Committee (ranking member), and the Education, Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business, and Investigations and Government Operations committees.[3]
