Biography
Staci Childs is the Democratic candidate for Texas House of Representatives District 131 in the November 3, 2026, general election, running against Republican Scott Whitmarsh in a race with no incumbent.[1][2] In a Ballotpedia survey, Childs described being a Houston attorney, former Houston ISD Teacher of the Year and elected member of the Texas State Board of Education representing District 4.[3]
Childs was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and graduated from Benjamin E. Mays High School.[2] Childs earned a bachelor's degree from Hampton University in 2009, a graduate degree from Georgia State University in 2011 and a J.D. from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University in 2018.[2] Ballotpedia lists a career that includes owning a private legal practice and working as an attorney and a language arts teacher, and says Childs runs the nonprofit GirlTalk University.[2]
In the survey, Childs said that years teaching elementary students in Southwest Houston and Sunnyside preceded law school, and that Childs now runs Sunnyside Legal, representing teachers, families and other Texans.[3] Childs said that on the State Board of Education the work has focused on protecting Black history in classrooms and securing tutoring and intervention funding for struggling campuses.[3]
