Biography

Shaun Finnie is the Democratic nominee for Texas's 2nd District, facing Republican Steve Toth. By his own account he is an investment banker who spent about 30 years in energy mergers and acquisitions after a brief career as an oil and gas lawyer. In his Ballotpedia survey he lists his priorities as reducing tariffs and health care costs, expanding the Affordable Care Act, education funding and bipartisan immigration reform.[1][2]

In his Ballotpedia Candidate Connection survey, Finnie says he grew up on a farm in a family of modest means, was raised with his two siblings by his mother, a registered nurse who worked two jobs, and was the first in his family to attend college.[1] According to the same survey, he earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Saskatchewan, a law degree from the University of Western Ontario, and an MBA in finance and accounting from Northwestern University; Ballotpedia's summary infobox lists Northwestern for all his degrees.[1] He says he worked as an oil and gas lawyer for three years, then spent roughly 30 years in investment banking focused on energy, primarily oil and gas mergers and acquisitions.[1]

Finnie says he and his wife have lived in The Woodlands for 20 years and raised four children there.[1] He says he served on the Board of Trustees of The John Cooper School for several years and founded an investment club for high school students, teaching personal finance to students for seven years.[1] He won the March 3, 2026 Democratic primary for Texas's 2nd District unopposed, according to Ballotpedia's results listing.[2][1]
