Biography

Sean Casten is the Democratic U.S. Representative for Illinois' 6th District, which he has represented since 2019.[1][2][3] A scientist and clean-energy executive before entering Congress, he defeated Republican incumbent Peter Roskam in 2018, sits on the Financial Services Committee and the Joint Economic Committee, and won his March 2026 primary with about 76% of the vote.[1][2][3]

Casten was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1971 to American parents.[3] He earned a bachelor's degree from Middlebury College (1989) and, according to his official biography, a Master of Engineering Management and a Master of Science in Biochemical Engineering from Dartmouth College's Thayer School of Engineering; Ballotpedia dates the graduate degree to 1993.[2][3]

Before politics, Casten worked as a scientist at the Tufts School of Medicine and as a clean-energy consultant and manager at Arthur D. Little.[2][3] He then served as president and CEO of Turbosteam Corporation, which generated heat and power from previously wasted energy, and in 2006 co-founded Recycled Energy Development; Ballotpedia dates the co-founding to 2007.[2][3] He was a founding chairman of the Northeast CHP Initiative and chaired the Northeast Combined Heat and Power Association (2005) and the U.S. Combined Heat and Power Association (2007).[2][3]

Casten won election to Congress on November 6, 2018, defeating incumbent Republican Peter J. Roskam, and took office in 2019.[3] He serves on the House Financial Services Committee and the Joint Economic Committee and is Vice-Chair of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition; his official biography says he has held more than 80 town halls.[2][3] He won re-election in 2020, 2022 and 2024, defeating then-Rep. Marie Newman in the 2022 primary, and won the March 17, 2026 Democratic primary.[1][3]
