Biography

Sarah McBride is the Democratic incumbent seeking re-election to Delaware's at-large U.S. House seat, which she won in 2024.[2][1] A Wilmington native, she worked in Democratic politics and LGBTQ advocacy, wrote a 2018 memoir and served in the Delaware State Senate from 2020 until joining Congress.[1][2] In the House she serves on the Foreign Affairs and Science, Space, and Technology committees.[2]

McBride was born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1990, and her official biography says she grew up in Wilmington and graduated from the Cab Calloway School of the Arts.[2][1] She earned a bachelor's degree from American University in 2013.[2][1]

McBride worked for former Gov. Jack Markell and the late Attorney General Beau Biden, and served as national spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign.[1][2] Ballotpedia also lists her as a national press secretary there and as having worked at the Center for American Progress and the White House during the Obama administration.[2] She led the effort to pass a non-discrimination law in Delaware before entering the legislature, and Markell awarded her the Order of the First State.[1] In 2018 she published a memoir, "Tomorrow Will Be Different," with a foreword by President Joe Biden, and she has taught public policy at the University of Delaware.[1]

McBride served as state senator for Delaware's First Senate District from 2020 to 2025, succeeding Harris McDowell.[1][2] Her office highlights the Healthy Delaware Families Act, which created paid family and medical leave, and the Protect Medicaid Act of 2024.[1][2] She was elected to the U.S. House in November 2024, defeating Republican John Whalen III, and CNN reported she became the first openly transgender person elected to Congress.[2]

In the 119th Congress McBride's committee assignments are the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and the Committee on Foreign Affairs.[2] She has served on the boards of the Delaware Art Museum, Delaware Colleges of Art and Design and Equality Delaware.[2]
