Roy Caldwell

Roy Caldwell is the Republican candidate for the Montana House of Representatives, District 84, in the November 3, 2026 general election. A retired U.S. Air Force officer and Academy graduate, he won the June 2, 2026 Republican primary over James Marshal and faces Democrat Tia Nelson.[1][2]

Roy Caldwell served in the U.S. Air Force from 1981 to 2013 and earned a bachelor's degree from the United States Air Force Academy in 1985, according to Ballotpedia.[1] In a Ballotpedia survey, he said he later earned a master's degree in Space Systems Management from Webster University and that his Air Force assignments included GPS satellite controller, KC-135R navigator, ROTC assistant professor, strategic planner, and project and software manager.[2]

Caldwell said in the survey that he worked for 12 years in the private sector as an FAA-certified aircraft dispatcher, taught middle school science, and worked nearly a decade for the Department of Veterans Affairs, most recently at the Montana VA Healthcare System at Fort Harrison as a management and program/data analyst.[2] He said he served as a House Sergeant at Arms staffer during the 2025 legislative session, volunteers with the Boy Scouts of America and Civil Air Patrol, and serves as vice commander of American Legion Post 2 in Helena.[2]

Caldwell defeated James Marshal in the June 2, 2026 Republican primary, 62.0 percent to 38.0 percent.[1] In the survey, he listed affordability, education options for parents, and limiting government overreach as his key campaign messages, and said he would seek government incentives for first-time home buyers and work to cut property taxes while watching government spending.[2]
