In a 2026 Ballotpedia survey, Lathan said she was born and raised in East Texas and graduated from Nacogdoches High School.[1] She said she graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2003, began her education career as an elementary teacher, earned a master's degree from the University of Phoenix four years later, and became a principal.[1] She said she retired from the Nacogdoches Independent School District in 2025 after 21 years in schools.[1]
Lathan advanced from the Democratic primary on March 3, 2026.[1] Her survey lists three key messages: livable wages and economic growth, more funding for public education with opposition to vouchers, and affordable health care.[1] She named holding elected officials accountable as a policy area she is passionate about and listed Blue Texas as an endorser.[1]
