Rosa DeLauro is the Democratic incumbent for Connecticut's 3rd Congressional District, first elected in 1990.[3][1] A New Haven native who worked in Democratic politics and on Capitol Hill before running, she chaired the House Appropriations Committee from 2021 to 2023 and is now its ranking member.[2][3] Her official biography lists child nutrition, the Child Tax Credit, food safety and health and education funding among her priorities.[2]
DeLauro was born on March 2, 1943, in New Haven, Connecticut, and graduated from Lauralton Hall high school in Milford.[3][1] She earned a bachelor's degree from Marymount College and a master's degree from Columbia University, and also attended the London School of Economics.[1][2][3]
DeLauro began her career in politics as campaign manager for New Haven Mayor Frank Logue.[1] She went on to serve as the first executive director of EMILY's List, as executive director of Countdown '87, the campaign against U.S. military aid to the Nicaraguan Contras, and as chief of staff to U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd.[2]
In 1990 DeLauro was elected to the U.S. House for the open seat of retiring Rep. Bruce Morrison, who ran for governor, and she has represented Connecticut's 3rd District since January 1991; she is serving her 18th term.[3][1] She co-chaired the House Democratic Steering Committee from 2003 to 2021.[3] DeLauro chaired the House Appropriations Committee from January 2021 to January 2023, the second woman to hold that post, and has been its ranking member since January 2023; she is also ranking member of the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee.[3][2]
DeLauro's official biography highlights her work on the Child Tax Credit, including a Young Child Tax Credit proposal, on child nutrition, and on a proposal for a single federal food safety agency, and says she co-chairs the Baby, Long Island Sound, and Food Safety caucuses.[2] According to that biography, she is married to Stanley Greenberg, and they have three grown children and six grandchildren.[2]
