Biography

Rob Bonta is the incumbent Democratic Attorney General, appointed in 2021 and elected in 2022, seeking a second full term. A former Alameda city councilmember and East Bay assemblymember, he has made lawsuits against the Trump administration a central focus; his office marked its 100th such suit on October 15, 2026.[1][2]

Bonta was born in Quezon City, Philippines, and immigrated to California with his family as an infant.[3] He attended public school in California and earned a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School.[3]

He worked in private practice and then as a deputy city attorney for the City and County of San Francisco.[3] He later served on the Alameda City Council and spent more than eight years in the California State Assembly.[1][3]

Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed him Attorney General, and he was sworn in on April 23, 2021, becoming the first person of Filipino descent to hold the office; he was elected to the post in 2022.[1][3]
