Ralph Ambrosio is the Republican and Conservative Party nominee in NY-20, where he is challenging Rep. Paul Tonko after both primaries were canceled and he advanced unopposed. A Navy veteran and attorney, he spent much of his career with the New York State Police, as a county prosecutor in Greene and Columbia counties, and in the State Police counsel's office.[1][2][3]

Ambrosio was born in Hudson and raised in Chatham, New York. He served in the U.S. Navy, on active duty and in the reserves, from 1970 to 1976, and he graduated from Clarkson University.[2][3]

He served with the New York State Police from 1977 to 1989 while earning his law degree. He then worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Greene and Columbia counties from 1989 to 1996, as a public defender, and as an assistant attorney general under Attorney General Dennis Vacco, before returning to the State Police as Assistant Counsel from 1999 to 2010.[2][3] According to his campaign website, he retired from the State Police and moved into private practice.[2]

Ambrosio, a Republican who lives in Delmar, announced in January 2026 that he would challenge Tonko in the 20th Congressional District, Spectrum News reported. His campaign website says he has lived in Delmar since 1985.[3][2]
