Biography
Patty Garcia is the Democratic nominee for the open 4th District seat. She holds a Ph.D. in educational policy studies from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, worked for Latino civic organizations, and then for U.S. Rep. Jesus "Chuy" Garcia (no relation) from 2019 as district director and later chief of staff. According to her campaign website, she is running on lower costs and higher wages and on defending immigrant families.[1][2][3][4]
Garcia earned bachelor's degrees in political science and speech communication, an M.A. (2009) and a Ph.D. (2011) in educational policy studies, all from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. WGN reported she is 40 and that she began her campaign at a Cicero grocery store and restaurant where she worked as a high school senior.[1][3][5] According to BallotReady, she was deputy director for constituency services-education at the NALEO Education Fund (2014-2017) and vice president of programs and operations at the Latino Center for Leadership Development (2017-2018).[3]
Garcia began working in Rep. Jesus Garcia's office in 2019, first as district director and then as chief of staff (2023-2025, per BallotReady). The Sun-Times reports she resigned as chief of staff in November 2025.[1][3][4] After Rep. Garcia announced in November 2025 that he would not seek re-election, she filed petitions shortly before the November 3 filing deadline. Critics called the sequence a coronation, and she has said the process was open and other Democrats could have filed. She was unopposed in the March 17, 2026 Democratic primary (52,616 votes).[2][5][4]
