Biography
Patrick Belmont is an unaffiliated candidate for Utah House of Representatives District 3 in the November 3, 2026 general election, in which he faces Republican incumbent Jason Thompson.[1][2] A professor at Utah State University, he said in a Ballotpedia survey that he is running as an independent focused on accountability and evidence-based decisions.[2][3]
Patrick Belmont was born in Chicago, Illinois, and earned a bachelor's degree from Texas Christian University in 2000 and a graduate degree and Ph.D. from Lehigh University in 2007.[2] His career experience includes working as a professor, and he has served as vice-chair of the Logan City Renewable Energy and Sustainability Advisory Board.[2] In a Ballotpedia survey, he described himself as a scientist, educator and longtime Cache Valley resident who teaches at Utah State University.[3]
Belmont ran for District 3 in 2022, when he was listed as a Democrat and incumbent Dan Johnson defeated him 56.6 percent to 43.4 percent.[2] He ran again in 2024 as an unaffiliated candidate for the open seat, losing to Jason Thompson 54.0 percent to 46.0 percent.[2]
In the survey, Belmont said he is running as an independent because he believes the parties are better at dividing people than bringing them together.[3] He said he would answer to evidence, conscience and the people he represents rather than party leadership.[3]
