Biography
Monica Mowdy is the Democratic candidate for the Tennessee House of Representatives, District 25, in the November 3, 2026 general election, where she faces incumbent Cameron Sexton (R).[1] A United Methodist pastor and former public school teacher in Cumberland County, she says she is running to make education funding a top priority and to repeal the state's private school voucher program.[1][2]
Monica Mowdy earned a bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University in 1983 and a degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in 2008.[1] In a Ballotpedia survey, she said she has lived in Tennessee for nearly 30 years, most of them in Cumberland County, and that she has been a public school teacher, a teacher trainer and an advocate for early care and education.[2] She said she answered the call to ministry in the United Methodist Church in 2004, has served three churches in the Cumberland County area, and is currently pastor of WellSpring UMC.[2]
Mowdy advanced from the August 6, 2026 Democratic primary unopposed.[1] In the survey, she listed her priorities as financial support for education, repeal of the private school voucher program and the third-grade retention law, protection of teacher pay and benefits, and a review of the state's reliance on sales, gas and property taxes.[2] She named Tennessee Advocates for Planned Parenthood, Tennessee College Democrats and ChangeTN as endorsers.[2]
