Michele Tafoya is the Republican nominee for the open U.S. Senate seat in Minnesota. A former sports broadcaster, she spent nearly three decades on radio and television, most prominently as an NFL sideline reporter for NBC, and is a first-time candidate. She won the August 11, 2026 Republican primary with 51.8% of the vote and says she is running to fight fraud and waste and to push for accountability.[1][2][3][7]

Tafoya was born on December 17, 1964, in Manhattan Beach, California, and attended high school there and in Redondo Beach.[8] She earned a bachelor's degree in mass communications from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1988 and an MBA from the University of Southern California in 1991.[8][3] She began her broadcasting career in Minneapolis, at KFAN radio and WCCO-TV, covering the Minnesota Vikings and the University of Minnesota, and joined CBS Sports in 1994 as a reporter and host.[4][8] She later worked for ABC Sports and ESPN from 2000 to 2011, where she became a sideline reporter for Monday Night Football, before returning to the NFL sidelines with NBC's Sunday Night Football from 2011 to 2022.[4][8] She also hosted an afternoon show on WCCO radio from 2009 to 2012, co-hosted mornings at KQRS in Minneapolis from 2016 to 2020 and hosted a show on the Salem Podcast Network.[4][8]

According to her campaign website, Tafoya worked her final NBC broadcast at Super Bowl LVI on February 13, 2022, her fifth Super Bowl, and retired the next day after covering 327 NFL games.[2] The site says she won four Sports Emmy Awards for Outstanding Sports Personality - Sports Reporter and two Gracie Awards from American Women in Radio and Television.[2] She told KAXE she also covered five Olympic Games.[3]

After leaving NBC, Tafoya joined Kendall Qualls's Republican campaign for Minnesota governor as co-chair, and she launched a political podcast, The Michele Tafoya Podcast, in 2022.[5][6] She announced her Senate candidacy on January 21, 2026, saying she was frustrated by what she called a "crisis of leadership" in Minnesota.[6] She and her husband, Mark Vandersall, live in Edina, Minnesota, and she told KAXE that she has campaigned in all 87 counties.[3][8]
