Biography

Michael Whatley is the Republican nominee for the open U.S. Senate seat in North Carolina. A lawyer and longtime Republican operative who has not held elective office, he served as chief of staff to Sen. Elizabeth Dole, worked in energy-industry advocacy, chaired the North Carolina Republican Party from 2019 and the Republican National Committee from 2024 to 2025. He won the March 3, 2026 Republican primary with 64.6% of the vote and is endorsed by President Trump.[1][2][4]

Whatley was born on October 1, 1968, in Michigan and moved to Watauga County, North Carolina, during high school; his campaign says he was raised in Blowing Rock, the son of an accountant and a librarian, and he graduated from Watauga High School in 1987.[5][2] As a high school student he volunteered for Sen. Jesse Helms's 1984 re-election campaign.[4] He earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1991, a master's degree in religion from Wake Forest University in 1993, a master's degree in theology from the University of Notre Dame in 1994 and a law degree from Notre Dame Law School in 1997, according to Ballotpedia.[3]

Whatley began his career as a federal law clerk in Charlotte, and Ballotpedia reports he was legal counsel to Sen. Paul Coverdell (R-Ga.) in 2000.[2][3] He worked on George W. Bush's Florida recount team in 2000 and, from 2001 to 2003, was a principal deputy assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Energy under Bush.[4][3] In 2004 Sen. Elizabeth Dole named him her chief of staff.[4][2]

Whatley was an executive vice president of the Consumer Energy Alliance from 2007 to 2019 and a partner at the lobbying firm HBW Resources, which The Assembly describes as a lobbying firm for oil and gas companies.[3][4] After President Trump's 2016 victory he led the Presidential Transition's energy, environment and agriculture teams, according to his campaign website.[2] Party leaders elected him chair of the North Carolina Republican Party in June 2019; he became general counsel of the Republican National Committee in February 2023, and the committee elected him its chair on March 8, 2024, and re-elected him in January 2025.[3][4][5] After press reports in July 2025 that he would run for Senate with Trump's support, he resigned as RNC chair on August 22, 2025, after announcing his Senate run.[3][5]

Whatley's campaign says he and his wife Suzanne live in Gaston County and have three children.[2]
