Biography
Mark R. Burrows is the Democratic candidate for North Carolina House of Representatives District 119, running against incumbent Republican Anna Ferguson in the November 3, 2026 general election.[1][3] He says in a Ballotpedia survey that he has worked in economic and community development in Transylvania County and Western North Carolina for more than 30 years.[2]
Burrows earned a bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University in 1985, a graduate degree from Duke University in 1987, and a certificate from the University of Oklahoma's Economic Development Institute in 2008.[1] In a Ballotpedia survey he said his work in local government has focused on economic, planning and community development, and that he is a certified planner (AICP).[2] He said he lives in Brevard with his wife, Betsy, and that they raised two children there.[2]
Burrows ran for this seat in 2024 and lost the general election to incumbent Republican Mike Clampitt, 55.4 percent to 44.6 percent.[1] He said he would support a statewide construction bond for K-12 school facilities and affordable early childhood education, and opposes shifting state funds to private schools.[2] He also named housing affordability as a priority, saying the lack of housing is the main driver of high costs.[2]
