Maria Thompson

RCandidate

On the ballot Nov 3, 2026: Nevada Senate District 9

Biography

Maria Thompson is the Republican candidate for the Nevada State Senate, District 9, in the November 3, 2026 general election, in which she faces incumbent Democrat Melanie Scheible.[1][3] An attorney and former investigative reporter, she said in a Ballotpedia survey that she is running on jobs and the economy, public safety and accountability.[1][2]

Maria Thompson studied law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas William S. Boyd School of Law, and Ballotpedia lists her profession as attorney.[1] Her Ballotpedia survey response describes her as having grown up in a family dedicated to public service, with a mother who is a nurse and a father who is a decorated veteran, and as having worked as an investigative reporter and as an attorney.[2]

The Republican primary for the seat on June 9, 2026 was canceled, and Thompson advanced to the general election.[1] In the survey, her campaign messages were cutting red tape for small businesses, supporting law enforcement and first responders while targeting drug trafficking and organized theft, and promoting transparency and fiscal responsibility in the Legislature.[2] She also listed healthcare, including bringing more medical specialists to Nevada and reducing wait times, as a policy interest, and listed an endorsement from Governor Joe Lombardo, among others.[2]
