Biography
Louis McNutt is the Democratic candidate for Minnesota State Senate District 29 in the November 3, 2026 general election, running against incumbent Republican Michael Holmstrom Jr.[1] In a Ballotpedia survey, he described himself as a heavy equipment mechanic and union president of AFSCME Local 5.[2]
McNutt said in a Ballotpedia survey that he works for the Minnesota Department of Transportation out of the Maple Grove station, is the father of three boys and the son of a school teacher, and has lived in Buffalo with his wife for more than 10 years.[2] He ran in the November 4, 2025 special general election for the same seat and lost to Michael Holmstrom Jr., 62.2 percent to 37.7 percent.[1] McNutt won the August 11, 2026 Democratic primary with 58.6 percent of the vote over Dan Fiskum.[1]
In the survey, McNutt listed his campaign messages as lowering the cost of living, a regulatory process for new data centers and a ban on AI-enabled surveillance cameras, and health care reform, including negotiating prescription drug prices.[2] He said he is the only DFL-endorsed candidate in the race and that he is also endorsed by AFSCME Council 5 and Education Minnesota, among other groups.[2][1]
