A Houston native, she has worked as a business professional and real estate sales agent and describes herself as a small business owner and Army mom. She has sought the seat in each cycle since 2020 and is running on affordability, a higher minimum wage and Medicare for All.[1][2][3]
Laura Jones was born and raised in Houston, Texas. In a 2020 Ballotpedia survey she described herself as a native Texan, wife, mother and business professional who had raised six children with her husband and operated a business.[1] Ballotpedia lists her career experience as a business professional and a real estate sales agent with HomePlus Realty Group.[1] She said in 2020 that she had served for a year as chair of the San Jacinto County Democrats and as field director for Texas Senate District 3 under the Texas Democratic Party's Non-Urban Rural Caucus, and that she and her husband had moved to a rural East Texas town.[1] Her campaign website describes her as a lifelong Texan, Army mom, small business owner and working-class American.[3]
Jones first ran for Texas's 8th Congressional District in 2020, when she lost the Democratic primary to Elizabeth Hernandez.[1] She won the Democratic nomination in 2022 and lost the general election to Republican Morgan Luttrell, 68.1% to 30.5%, then won the nomination again in 2024 and lost to Luttrell, by then the incumbent, 68.2% to 31.8%.[1] After Texas redrew the district and Luttrell chose not to seek re-election, she won the March 3, 2026 Democratic primary over Keith Coleman, 65.7% to 34.3%.[4][1]
