Biography

Kris Mayes is the incumbent Democratic Attorney General, a former journalist and Arizona State University professor who served on the Arizona Corporation Commission from 2003 to 2010 and was elected Attorney General in 2022. Her campaign highlights drug and fentanyl prosecutions, Medicaid-fraud enforcement, consumer-protection suits and federal litigation.[1][2][3]

Mayes grew up in Prescott, the child of a public-school teacher and a neighborhood pharmacist, according to her campaign biography.[2] She studied political science and journalism at Arizona State University, later earned a master's in public administration from Columbia University and a law degree from Arizona State, and began her career as a journalist.[3][2]

She served in the Napolitano administration and was a member of the Arizona Corporation Commission from 2003 to 2010, chairing it from 2009 to 2010; she served on the commission as a Republican.[3][1] Before becoming Attorney General she was a professor at Arizona State University's School of Global Sustainability.[3]

Mayes won the 2022 Attorney General election by 280 votes.[1][2] Her campaign describes her as the only Arizona official elected statewide as both a Republican and a Democrat.[2]
