Biography
Karla Hult is the Democratic candidate for the Minnesota State Senate, District 50, in the November 3, 2026 general election; the seat has no incumbent, and Owen Michaelson (R) is also running.[1][2] In a Ballotpedia survey, she described herself as an award-winning journalist who stepped away from journalism in 2026 to run.[3]
Karla Hult said in a Ballotpedia survey that she worked in newsrooms across the country covering political, international and cultural stories, including the urban-rural political divide.[3] She graduated from St. Olaf College, where she has served as an adjunct professor of journalism, and earned a master's degree in international affairs from Columbia University.[3] She said she founded So Many Goodbyes, a mission supporting families affected by dementia, after her father's Alzheimer's disease, and that she hosts the weekly podcast "Hello Alzheimer's."[3] She said she and her husband are raising two daughters in the community.[3]
In the survey, Hult listed defending democracy and fundamental rights, fully funded public schools with smaller class sizes, affordable health care, and affordable housing among her campaign messages.[3]
